Chances are you’ll tell me I’m nuts. Why? Because you would realize right away that you don’t open a business on a whim. First you’d have to know what type of business you want. You would need to analyze if such a business can be profitable in that location. You would have to negotiate a lease, pay some rent and arrange and pay for a fit out. You would then need to get your stock, and work out what type of marketing and advertising to focus on to get some customers.

That all takes time and at the end of it, you may decide it’s the wrong shop/office, in the wrong location for your market.

With an internet business, you don't have to go through most of that. The thing that makes the Internet so unique is that it’s the greatest leveler of all time. Everyone, regardless of age, appearance, nationality or religion can start a business online, with little or no investment. But make no mistake, not everyone's business will be equal or successful.

Within the internet business community you will soon learn that there are some very clear separations.

On the lowest rung is the newbie.

A newbie is a new arrival, an amateur who hasn’t yet earned a ticket to the so called ‘big secrets’ of how to succeed. Few veterans expect a newbie to survive for very long, either financially or emotionally, and just as few have qualms about promoting products to them knowing, or at least suspecting, that few of them will last long enough to learn how to use the product, let alone make any money from it.

At the other end of the scale is the Guru.

A Guru is someone who is rumored to be very successful, who probably earns in the millions each year, who is admired, respected and sometimes vilified by others, but is acclaimed as a uniquely skilled expert. Of course, a Guru can also be self proclaimed. The internet is very fluid that way.

Finally we have everybody else. The ‘have yet to get anywhere’, the ‘up and coming’, the ‘ne’er do well’, the ‘on the way to success’, and finally, the ones who can say they have made it.

The group you will eventually belong to will depend on how well you plan your business and how much time and yes, even money you are prepared to put into it.

My advice to you is learn as much as you can before you start your business. experiment with free products before you start draining your credit card and never buy a product that doesn't instantly make sense to you.

By 'sense' I mean for example that if it comes with a dozen videos it not likely to make sense for quite some time.

Knowing how and where to get your customers is your first priority, just as it is in the real world, so start learning all about advertising on the internet. Get some free list building programs and build yourself a list of potential customers you can market to. Then look around for the right product to present to your list.

Alternatively, start spending money and hope you know what you are doing.

I have made it a practice to write about my experiences, good and bad, since I first started doing business on the internet.

I don’t know if you realize it, but at this very moment, around the world, there are millions of people either already doing business on the internet, or thinking about it. I’m one if them. You probably are too.

There is something very seductive about the idea of working from home. Imagine being able to sip your morning coffee, still in your pyjamas, while you respond to your daily emails. The scene may not be a pretty to others, but it sure feels good and it beats battling traffic to get to the office.

Of course, you can’t just give up your job to start an online business. If only it was that simple. There are a few things you have to do firsts and the ‘making some money’ part, is not on top of the list.

There is a wealth of different types of businesses you can join on the internet. Contrary to popular myth, the multi-level, or pyramid style program are far from the only ones, they are not even the most common, they just happen to be the most visible, the ones you are likely to find first.

Choosing the right business from the start can mean the difference between setting yourself up for success, backing your own judgment and focussing all your energy on the one program and getting results, or finding yourself moving from one product to the next, paying money needlessly, always looking for the next new thing and never really making any money.

Even getting free programs and ebooks can be a distraction. They rob you of your time and often you will find, months later, that you haven't even looked at them. If you don't need it right now don't download it. You can always bookmark it.

The right choice cannot be made on impulse and certainly not until you have taken the time to do your research. Getting it right can be tricky because almost every program offered on the internet these days, comes with glowing recommendations and promises of enough automation to make you redundant.

Let’s get real. If it’s on automation, what do they need you for? Do you really want to start a business which you don’t understand? And remember, you won’t necessarily realize that you don’t understand it, till after you have paid your money.

Code speak for automation is “if you are a newbie, you probably won’t understand what your new business requires of you and you might wish you hadn’t bought it when you find out. But since you are prepared to pay us your money, we figure you’ll find that out for yourself”.

Never forget the old adage: BUYER BEWARE.!

Starting an internet business is all about asking the right questions, and unfortunately, they don’t often match the answers you are going to get.

You will want to know exactly what your choices really are.

What are those different types of businesses that are being successfully run on the internet? What is the core business of each of them? If you were to sign up and pay your money, what would you be required to do with your shiny new program? Who is going to set it all up for you? What will you need to learn to run the business without help? Who is going to teach you what to do to get customers?

Finally, your most critical question will probably be: When and how are you going to start making some money?

The right answer to all of those questions is, that 99% of the time, once you have paid your money, it’s all up to you. If you are lucky, someone might give you a link to a tutorial which might answer one or two of your questions, but don’t count on it.

The only way left is to join some business forums where you can get help and or search Google for your answers.

That’s why it’s so important to aim for a business you can take personal control over in a short period of time. Without full understanding and control over your business, how can you expect to make decisions that that will ultimately decide the success or failure of your business.

Choosing your business is therefore critical. If the program you buy comes with mentoring, that’s a good thing, but don’t be fooled, mentoring can be very brief and tends to focus on the top students.

When you are ready to choose a program, first consider which type of business is going to suit your talents, interests, and experience, because, at the end of day, if you love what you do, you will make a lot more money doing it.

A good start is to dedicate a full day, or equal to, just checking out as many business offers as you can find on the internet in that time, without buying a single one. To get the information, you will have to leave your name and email address behind. If you don't like that, you simply use the first email they send you to opt out, then you won't hear from them again. Just don’t use your credit card.

If you can do this, you will have passed the first hurdle called ‘how not to be scammed before you even get started’. You will have learned that no matter how genuine and URGENT the offer might be, you can always return to it later, once you are certain the program is the right one. No one is going to refuse your money.

It’s your job to be careful!

If you have come this far and you are still interested in an online business, you are ready to look more seriously.

I have been struggling for a few months to create a successful online home business. Like most newbies, I have had my share of failure, I have been scammed and I’ve paid for programs only to be ignored as soon as the cheque was cashed. To be honest, I have lost more money than I can afford to lose. I know I’m not the only one, but it's a little humiliating.

I can tell you, with more than a tinge of embarrassment, that until very recently my total earnings from my online business was a mega $33.

A short time ago, an unknown email showed up in my inbox. Normally I would have sent it to the trash can, but I was hanging around waiting on a confirmation email, so, being bored, I opened it and I clicked on the offer to check it out.

The link took me to a capture page which I found very intriguing, so I followed the links to learn more. I’m a bit of a cynic and I kept thinking ‘this is too good to be true, but then something clicked and I thought 'I Can Do This'.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe every newbie, who faces the world of internet business for the first time, dreams how great it would be if an experienced Guru would show up, take them by the hand and patiently, teach them where to start and what to do.

I don't think even the most optimistic newbie imagines that this could actually happen, for real. But guess what? It happened to me! I still can't believe how close I came to missing out on the best thing ever.

In the real world, there is an old salesman's adage that goes something like this,

"It takes the same amount of time and effort to close a sale for a commission of $100, as it does for one of a $1,000"

Let’s be honest, the commission is always important. But even more important is the product. Most products marketed on the Internet are intended for and sold to other marketers. It's hard to believe but it is true. It’s a kind of self perpetuating vacuum.

Online and offline, the best product is always the one everybody wants. The product I discovered is sold both online and offline but it can only be used in the real world and everyone, including you, already loves it, and wants it and can’t wait to use it. As for the commission? Well, it’s a $1000 a sale what more is there to say?

So to sum it up, I now have this great product, I earn $1000 on every sale and when the people who buy, also make a sale, I make another $1000 and so on and so on.

I have a product which is everybody's dream, 'Travel'. Holidays around the world, staying at luxury 5star resorts, for a mere fraction of the normal cost. Who doesn’t want to do that?

As if that isn't enough, I have a couple of guys tracking my every move, making sure that I make lots of sales, and learn how to keep doing it. Why are they so persistently doing that?

Because every time I get a sale and earn $1000, they also earn a $1,000. So, in a perfect synergy, ‘if I don't get paid, they don't get paid.’ It should be very clear to see that it's not too difficult and it doesn't take too many sales, for even a newbie to earn $16+ per month.

Two days ago, I made a very important decision. I am going to set up an online home business and I am going to make it profitable.
Of course, every business has it's problems. As I look around my 2 room apartment I notice that space may be one of them. I have a tiny desk propped in the corner of my bedroom with just enough room for a chair. What made me pick this guy you ask? Well, for one thing, the guy didn't ask me for money. He is relying on me to make some money so he can one day profit from all the time he spends supporting me with help and advice. To me that means he believes in what he is doing and what's even more impressive, he believes he can teach me to do it as well. Wow, he probably has more to lose than I do since, trust me, right now, his time is a lot more valuable than mine and he won't want to waste it.
So here I am, I have this really smart guy teaching me how to create a successful online business and he is going to keep doing it until I succeed. Can it get any better than that?
Of course it's not all beer and skittles, I actually have to learn some stuff. Quite a lot of stuff actually. I am clocking more hours studying and learning than I have done since high school, but I'm having fun, I'm learning a ton of new things. Some I'd never heard of before, I have even got my own website. I am feeling pretty good!
